Kenya - Thurungi Washing Station / Mixed Varieties / Washed
Nestled in the lush highlands of Kirinyaga County, the Thunguri Washing Station is known for producing some of Kenya’s most vibrant and complex coffees. Working with over 500 smallholder farmers, it plays a crucial role in preserving the region’s coffee heritage, where generations of growers cultivate coffee at high elevations. This carefully washed lot is a reflection of both the terroir and the precision of Thunguri’s processing—where meticulous sorting, double-washing, and slow drying on raised beds bring out the clarity, structure, and dynamic fruit character that define the best Kenyan coffees.
Grown at elevations of 1,800–2,200 metres above sea level, this lot features SL28, SL34, Batian, K7, and Ruiru 11, varieties prized for their bright acidity and structured complexity. After careful handpicking, cherries are pulped and undergo Kenya’s classic double-wash process, a method that enhances clarity and refinement in the cup.
The process begins with an initial washing phase, where pulped coffee is submerged overnight in water from the Ragati River, allowing any remaining mucilage to loosen. The following day, the coffee is thoroughly washed through traditional grading channels, where heavier, denser beans are separated from lighter ones. After this, the coffee is moved to a second clean water soak, ensuring complete removal of any remaining residue while refining the acidity and structure of the final cup. The coffee is then dried slowly on raised beds for 2–4 weeks, carefully turned to ensure even moisture loss and optimal flavour development.
The result is a quintessential Kenyan coffee—juicy, clean, and endlessly dynamic, highlighting the precision of Thunguri’s processing and the unique characteristics of Kirinyaga’s high-altitude terroir.
Flavour profile: Blackcurrants, toffee, hibiscus florals.
