A rare twist from Kenya—this unique batch from Mara Estate challenges expectations. Grown in Narok County’s highlands, just a few kilometres from the vast savannahs of the Masai Mara, this coffee thrives in an environment rarely associated with specialty production.
Established in 2019, Mara Estate is a young farm planted entirely with Batian, a cultivar developed for disease resistance and quality but seldom grown as a single variety. With minimal shade and a harvest that falls during Kenya’s fly crop months of May to July, this estate is already producing some of the country’s most unconventional coffees.
Only a small fraction of the harvest undergoes this process, and we’re excited to have secured some. Whole cherries are picked at peak ripeness, then sealed in barrels for four days of fermentation before being finished as naturals on raised beds.
This extended fermentation is a striking departure from Kenya’s traditional bright, structured profiles—yet just as captivating. The result is a cup that is both familiar and entirely new—silky and smooth, with delicate florals, yellow fruit, and a whisper of golden pastry.
